Gordon urges public to be part of solution in COVID-19 fight

Sen. Richard Gordon on Monday urged the public to cooperate in implementing health measures to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Senator Richard Gordon

“People must be part of the solution,” stressed the chairman of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) during an interview over CNN Philippines.

Amid arguments whether to return Metro Manila and nearby provinces back to general community quarantine (GCQ), the lawmaker pointed these health measures should be implemented regardless of the quarantine status of any area in the country.

“It’s a matter of people cooperating, wearing masks, distancing, washing hands. That’s the most important thing. We can work if you do that,” he explained.

The lawmaker reminded that the MECQ was imposed to give “frontliners some time to rest because they are all overworked.”

The senator observed that the government still needs a lot of improvement  in the “case finding and isolation” of persons with COVID-19.

“’Yun ang mahina tayo, case finding and isolation (We are weak in case finding and isolation),” said Gordon.

The lawmaker disclosed that he  wrote a letter to Health Secretary Francisco Duque III about the slow pace in informing persons that they have tested positive for COVID-19.

“They are over worked as we are,” he observed.

Because of this, Gordon said he offered to Duque that the PRC be allowed to help in the government’s contact tracing and isolation efforts.

“Isang malaking problema pa (another problem) there is very timid referral system. people don’t know where to go,” he lamented.

“Dapat government and the private sector should be helping so that ang tao hindi natataranta, hindi nakakapasok sa hospital (Government and the private sector should be helping each other so that people don’t panic and not get into hospitals),” he added.
