Bong Go optimistic Kadayawan Festival could be celebrated in COVID-19 free environment next year

DAVAO CITY – Senator Christopher Lawrence Go is optimistic the city will celebrate the Kadayawan Festival next year free from coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

The pandemic has compelled the local government to hold most of the Kadayawan festivities online, in keeping with the minimum health standards to contain the virus.

“I am saddened that we cannot celebrate it like it was before. Every year, I celebrate the festivity along with the Dabawenyos where we can see street parties,” the Davao City-native said in an interview on Friday afternoon.

He also asked Dabawenyos for patience, saying President Rodrigo Duterte was doing his best to address the problem.

“I really hope that we can celebrate the Kadayawan festival next year,” Go said.

He also asked the Dabawenyos to cooperate on the health protocols imposed by the government to successfully combat the spread of the infection.

“We will be of service to all of you. We are just asking for your cooperation and I know we will overcome it,” Go said.

Early this week, the city government opened the Kadayawan Week with a flag ceremony at Quezon Park.

Mayor Sara Z. Duterte led the brief ceremony together with the deputy mayors of the 11 tribes of the city.

Duterte urged the public to support the virtual activities of Kadayawan, which are streamed on social media platforms.

The mayor also encouraged parents at home to explain to their children the reason for celebrating the Kadayawan Festival: to be thankful for the blessings of a good harvest to preserve the cultural traditions of the local tribes.
