Appeal of frontliners for NCR ECQ stressed

The appeal of healthcare workers to place the National Capital Region under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) anew aims to come up with a better strategy against the COVID-19 pandemic  and not for them to go “out of town,” an officer of the Filipino Nurses United (FNU) said Sunday.

“Kailangan natin yung dalawang linggo hindi para magpahinga kami at mag-out of town. We need two weeks not to rest and go out of town, but to rest, think (of a better plan); and let those employees, who can’t go to work, to recover so that the understaffing does not get worse],” said FNU officer Jaymee de Guzman in response to some government officials dismissing the call of healthcare workers.

Ang punto po ay nagkakasakit na rin po kami [The annoying and funny thing is that this call is still being deemed by some politicians that we just need to do our jobs better. Some of them think that we are just being lazy. That is not the point here. The point is, we are getting sick too],” she said.

De Guzman is hoping that the government would understand the current situation of the healthcare workers.

That is to give us enough time because if people are on ECQ, the number of those who would go outside as well as the number of infection will be reduced],” she said.

Sen. Cynthia Villar has opposed the call of the medical community to put NCR in the strictest community quarantine measure, urging the healthcare workers to work harder in time of the pandemic.

“Hindi na siguro, pagbutihin nila trabaho nila. Hindi pwedeng isara ang ekonomiya kasi kung ‘di naman mamamatay sa COVID, mamamatay naman [sa] gutom ang mga tao [Maybe not, they just need to work harder. We can’t close down the economy because the people will die, not because of COVID, but from hunger],” she said.
