Binay urges DOTr to be forthright with jeepney drivers

By Hannah Torregoza

Sen. Nancy Binay said the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) should stop pointing fingers and immediately act on the plight of traditional jeepney drivers who are suffering from loss of income.

Senator Nancy Binay

Without concrete plans, aid and support from the government, Binay said state transport regulators should stop pursuing the jeepney modernization program that has jeepney drivers and operators reeling from injustice.

“Masakit tanggapin na tila hinayaan na lamang ng gobyerno na unti-unting maupos ang kabuhayan ng ating mga jeepney driver. ‘Yung harap-harapang ipapamukha sa kanila na ‘di sila kasama sa hierarchy ng essential sectors–walang ayuda, walang plano, walang suporta. (It’s hard to accept that the government itself is leaving our jeepney drivers to fend for themselves. Telling them to their faces that they are not part of the hierarchy of essential sectors—without any aid, any plan, any support),” Binay said.

The senator noted transport agencies are giving jeepney drivers and operators the runaround and false hopes whenever they are asked if passenger jeepneys would be allowed to resume operation.

She pointed out it was the DOTr itself that promised that the government would allow traditional jeepneys to resume limited operations if PUVs and buses can no longer accommodate the passenger demand in a certain area.

And yet the government is pushing for the modernization program stating that majority of traditional jeepneys should be phased out before the year ends.

“Ang pagsusulong ng modernization program ay dapat inclusive at ‘di exclusive na pumapabor sa isang sektor. Hindi tama na pagkaitan natin ng trabaho at kabuhayan ang ating mga kababayan habang may pandemya (Pursuing the jeepney modernization program should be inclusive and not exclusive and favoring one sector only. It’s not right to withhold jobs and livelihood for our people while there is a pandemic),” Binay said.

Binay said the DOTr and LTFRB should be upfront about their plans for the country’s struggling transport sector.

“Ano na ba talaga ang plano ng DOTr at LTFRB? Parang pinapahaba lang nila ang kalbaryo ng mga kababayan nating namamasada… Kung makakabalik, ‘wag nang maraming dahilan (What’s the real plan of DOTr and LTFRB? It seems they are just prolonging the agony of our jeepney drivers. If they can return, they shouldn’t come up with excuses),”

“Kung ‘di na makakabalik, ‘wag nang paasahin at linawin sa mga operator at driver kung ano ang plano at gagawin ng gobyerno sa 250,000 na tsuper at operators, (If they can’t resume their livelihood, they should stop giving false hopes and make it clear to the operators and drivers what the government plans to do for the 25,000 jeepney drivers and operators),” the senator pointed out.

Binay also noted that jeepney drivers and operators have had enough of the evasive response and the repulsive treatment they are getting from the DOTr and LTFRB.
