BFP probes ‘Bora 27’ over conference while PH is under quarantine

By Chito Chavez

A team has been formed to investigate the supposed conference on Boracay Island of 27 Bureau of Fire Protection personnel, including one that should be on quarantine and was later tested positive for COVID-19, BFP Director Jose Embang Jr. revealed Thursday.

Embang emphasized that community quarantine protocols prohibit gatherings and meetings “unless necessary” and with “limited participants.”

Based on the reports gathered by his office, Embang said the BFP personnel arrived on Boracay on the afternoon of June 12, after the inspecting team from the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) left the island.

Embang said a BFP team joined the IATF team that inspected the island in preparation for its reopening.

After the IATF team left, Embang, in an interview over GMA News, said a second batch of BFP personnel arrived in the afternoon. This batch is now the subject of the probe to determine if they indeed had a meeting, or what was the purpose of their visit on the island.

He added that a total of 27 BFP personnel, now referred to as the “Bora 27,” attended the said gathering.

The BFP chief admitted that it was unclear if the “Bora 27” conducted a meeting but reports reaching the BFP headquarters revealed what occurred was a despedida.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año has already ordered the relief of the BFP regional director in Region VI following the alleged breach of quarantine protocols of a BFP employee.

The BFP employee, who was later tested positive for COVID-19, allegedly roamed the island while waiting for the result of her reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test.

Aklan acting mayor Frolibar Bautista said the BFP employee was on Boracay Island from June 12 to 14.
