“Itong mga routes na ito (These routes) they take care the last mile,” said Transportation senior consultant Alberto Suansing said during an interview over CNN Philippines on Monday.

Suansing said there 308 modern jeepneys which have been allowed to operate in all 15 routes but they can only fill up their seats at 50 percent capacity.

“Before pinoprovide lang namin transportation are the main routes being serviced by the buses (Before we only provided transportation in the main routes being serviced by buses),” he noted.

There are currently 31 bus routes established by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulator Board (LTFRB).

Now that modern jeepneys have been allowed, Suansing urged operators to adopt the cashless payment of fares.

“We highly recommend that it should be cashless transaction to lessen the probability of transmission of COVID,” he said.

Suansing noted that some modern jeepneys and even buses have been using automatic fare collection system (AFCS).

“Dual kasi ang purpose noon. (It has a dual purpose). It does not only collect the fare but at the same time collect information that that is needed for contact tracing,” he said.
