DILG Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya cited the need for increasing the supply of public transportation as people return to work following an extended quarantine that has greatly affected their livelihood.

With the relaxed quarantine protocols, Malaya reminded the public to stay disciplined and strictly adhere to quarantine protocols as none have been allowed to return to work.

He stressed that the government has done everything humanly possible to combat COVID-19 adding that it is the turn of the public to do their part in being well-disciplined even with the less restricted quarantine rules.

Malaya issued the urgent call as more public transportation vehicles including UV Express and traditional jeepneys will be allowed on the road in the coming days.

“Government has already done everything possible to stop the spread of COVID. We are one of the first countries to make face masks mandatory. We are one of the first countries to declare a lockdown. We did all we could given the situation,” Malaya said in an interview over GMA News.

Stressing it to be a shared responsibility, Malaya emphasized that the burden of exercising strict quarantine discipline now lies on each individual as social distancing, proper hygiene and wearing of masks are basic responsibilities to combat COVID-19.

Initially, the government has allowed buses, taxis, trains and modern jeepneys to operate with UV Express units and traditional jeepneys expected to be out on the streets soon.
