Pope sets day of fasting & prayer against pandemic

By Christina Hermoso

Filipino Catholics will join Pope Francis and the more than one billion Roman Catholics today, May 14, for prayer and fasting to put an end to the coronavirus disease pandemic.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) encourages the faithful “to join the inter-religious activity to pray for an end to the world health crisis.”

The Holy Father is calling on all religious leaders “to pray as one to end the pandemic.”

“We invite all men and women, believers in God, the All-Creator, to join in the said appeal,” said CBCP secretary general Fr. Marvin Mejia, in a CBCP News post.

The initial proposal for the Day of Prayer came from the High Committee for the Human Fraternity, which was formed after the Pope and the Grand Imam of al-Azhar signed a document on “human fraternity” in 2019. Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed el-Tayeb also supported “the noble humanitarian call” made by the committee.

Archdiocese of Manila Apostolic Administrator Bishop Broderick Pabillo, earlier, called on the faithful to observe the Day of Prayer with acts of charity, “to help at least one person within your reach, no matter the amount,” he said.

“This is a very concrete sign of solidarity and unity among all religions since prayer, fasting, and acts of charity are common to all and we are all affected by this pandemic,” Pabillo said.
