President Duterte has praised Health Secretary Francisco Duque III and other Cabinet members for being the real “workhorses” in the government’s efforts to combat the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

In his televised public address Monday night, the President said Cabinet members are “overworked” but told them this is the “price of public service.”

“I’d like to thank everybody, beginning from Secretary Duque, Secretary (Eduardo) Año, Secretary (Carlito) Galvez (Jr.) , ang ating workhorses talaga dito (the real workhorses here),” he said during a meeting with several Cabinet members, also members of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Infectious Diseases (IATF) on Monday.

“I know that overworked kayong lahat especially harried masyado ‘yung ano mo Secretary Duque (i know that you are all overworked especially Secretary Duque is especially harried) but that is the price of public service,” he said.

Duterte admitted that he “cannot run my own errands” and instead only functions through his Cabinet.

He also expressed his trust and confidence on Duque, saying the government will continue to rely on his counsel in fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

“There are those who agree with you and those who vehemently disagree with you. Gusto ko lang malaman ng lahat na ang Secretary ng Department of Health ay si Secretary Duque (I want everyone to know that the Secretary of Department of Health is Secretary Duque) and this government, my government, my department, will be guided by what Secretary Duque will tell us to do,” he said.

Duterte also tried to lift the spirit of Duque who has recently been the subject of resignation calls, saying he can end each day with a sense of accomplishment despite the criticisms that come his way.

“You are crucified, you are — lahat na — criticized severely. But in the end, when you retire or even for the day you sleep, and if you think about what you did for the country, medyo ano ka na, kampante ka na (you will be content),” he said.

“I will listen to the conflicting claims. But in the end, it is the Secretary of Health who decides. His word is the law here ,” he said.

Duque, who was seated near the President, said he is grateful for the President’s support. “Thank you, sir,” he told the President.

Last month, several senators recently called for the resignation of Duque for his alleged failure of leadership in the country’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. In a resolution, the senators claimed that Duque’s negligence and inefficiency have led to “poor planning, delayed response, lack of transparency, and misguided and flip-flopping polices and measures” in dealing with the health emergency.

The President rejected calls for Duque’s ouster and instead told the health chief to stay put.
